I saw a magazine article a few months back written by a motorcycle mechanic who noticed this as well in North America. He thought it was because most roads tend to not be perfectly falt but are slightly convex with a higher center to force rain to drain away from the center to the edge of the road. If you are riding in the right side lane the left side of the tire would get more wear.
It was decent weather earlier today, so I went out riding for an hour but now it is pouring rain... :-(
